How To Repot An Orchid ? 7 Easy Steps to Transfer Your Orchid To Another Pot (with video)!

Kindness bequeaths kindness. I honestly believe that I got my very first orchid as a blessing for an act of kindness I did. No need to tell the details of the act but every time I saw my orchid it strengthens my belief of the golden rule which is to do unto others what you want others to do unto you.

An orchid arrangement is expensive. The last time I visited a flower shop, an arrangement with one moth orchid stalk in a simple pot costs 3,200 PHP pesos (around 64 US dollars). That is inclusive of delivery fee if the receiver is within the city.  The elegance of an orchid flower out value its cost that is why many gift givers pay the high price of choosing the plant as a gift for their loved ones.

The amazement of being gifted with an orchid is really exceptional. I can tell you that with much honesty because, as I have said earlier, I got my first orchid as a gift from a friend. The awesome feeling did not last very long for my mind got busy when I realized that I had to know how to keep the plant alive for a long, long time, if not for my whole life time. I immediately asked my husband for help. After searching the internet and asking our close friends we concluded that the very first thing we need to do is to transfer the orchid to a bigger pot where its root can fit comfortably. This is called repotting.

How to repot an orchid?

This repotting procedure I am going to show is a combination of what my husband and I heard and read. This how we did it.  Let us begin by enumerating to you the materials we prepared.

  1. Medium. Orchids are commonly not planted in soil. They are usually planted in mediums such as bark mixture, moss and coconut husk. Choosing the medium has an impact to how watering of the plant must be done. I leave this for your further research. Some gardening stores sell ready mix medium. You may inquire from the store the watering procedure for the medium you will buy and use. The medium we chose is a mixture of coconut husk and charcoal. Why?  First, these are readily available at our home and second I can do watering daily if needed because a friend a told us that charcoal and coconut husk may not be as good as moss when absorbing water.
  1. Pot. The suitable pot for an orchid, as they say, are those with many holes because orchids cannot survive in a wet environment for a long time. Water must be drained immediately. Instead of buying a new pot my husband made use of an old and small trash plastic container and just put holes on it.
  2. String. This will be used for hanging pot because orchids, as we have learned, the orchid we received is an air plant or an epiphyte.
  3. 2 pales with Water. One for soaking charcoal and another for soaking the orchid.
  4. Hot water. This is for softening and sanitizing the coconut husk.
  5. Scissors.  This is for cutting dead roots and leaves of the orchid.

Now, here are the steps we took for repotting our orchid.

  1. Soak charcoals in water for 24 hours.

  1. Crush into pieces 1 coconut husk then pour newly boiled water on it. Wait until cools down.

  1. Remove the orchid from the pot, cut the dead or unhealthy roots and leaves.
  2. Soak the orchid in a pale of water for 5 min then remove it
  3. Put some charcoal in the pot. Just enough to cover its bottom.
  4. Put the orchid then fill the pot with coconut husk.
  5. Hang the orchid. This is an optional step.
