We have two dogs, both are male. We got the older one 14 years ago and the younger one just 3 years ago. My sons named our first dog, Brock, after a character in a famous anime series. I named our second dog Coco for lack or no reason at all.
As much as I can remember, our first dog was seldom humping. I don’t know if it was because he was caged every weekday and we only let him out and play with us every weekend. We had our reasons why we let Brock live in a cage, but this changed when I stopped working in the office and spent most of the time at home. I let Brock out of the cage and let him loaf around our yard. I realized many benefits on letting our dog out of the cage and out of our house. You can read about it in the following link.

Even if we let Brock of the cage, still, I did not notice him humping so much.
After 11 years, we adopted a puppy and that was Coco. In his first year he was playful and nice to Brock but as he grew older, he began being offensive to Brock and started mounting or humping on him whenever possible. There were also times when Coco was humping and even peeing on my legs. His behavior was truly irritating.
Here is Coco when he was still young. (Pls. Click the link below)

After reading multiple articles on the internet about Coco’s behavior and after asking a vet I learned that the possible reason for Coco’s humping behavior may be any of the following.
- Excitement – Coco may be very excited to play with me which probably raises also his libido causing his unwanted body movements. This may also be the reason for one or two occasions where he urinated on my legs.
- Dominance – Coco may want to show Brock that he must be the leader among the two of them that is why he is mounting on Brock whenever there was a chance.
- Sexual Needs- Coco is not neutered and there is a big chance that he wants to satisfy his sexual needs being already an adult dog.
- Disease – One reason which I hoped against is that it could be a medical condition such as urinary tract infection or skin allergy that causes itchiness.
What are the things I did to lessen if not eradicate my dog’s humping?
Give him a treat.
Every time Coco would start humping on me or on Brock. I would call his attention and show him a treat. It does not have to be expensive. Sometimes when I ran out of dog treats, I give him crackers, a piece of chicken or bread. Sometimes I throw it and sometimes I make him run after me.
Throw a ball.
I throw a ball or a toy to divert my Coco’s attention once he starts humping.
Play with him
When I don’t have a treat or a ball or a toy. I play with my dog by running while calling his name. I entice him to run after me.
Spray a little water.
When I can’t stop my dog from humping even after doing other tricks, I spray a little water on his head or butt. I tried this many times and it worked.
Find a lover.
Coco is a lucky dog., Once, I was able to find a bitch (female dog) whom he can release all his fantasies. The bitch is a pet of my friend.
Humping is a natural behavior of dogs. It can be embarrassing and irritating, but we as pet owners must be understanding with our pets. We can only try to control or modify their behavior. Consult a veterinarian to ensure that your dog ‘s humping is not caused by a medical condition.
